
Mechanically woven cotton souvenir from a textile manufacturer exhibiting at the International Exposition Barcelona 1929 [May 20, 1929-January 15, 1930], featuring a reproduction by the house draftsman J. Perez (credited in the bottom left corner as “Teorico-Dibujante de la Casa”) of the painting Las hilanderas (The Spinners, 1655-1660) by Velázquez held in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. In the upper left corner of the woven composition, the royal seal marks the vendor Ribot as a “Provedor de la Real Casa,” a chosen supplier to the monarchy, while the advertisement running along the border says Ribot specializes in “Fabricacion pulcra – materias selectas – mantelerias sabanas – colchas – toallas – panos etc etc – e specialidad en equipos para hoteles” (all the essentials for hotel linens especially). With an address at Santa Ana 37, Barcelona and “Casa Centenaria,” and a trademark of Sucr. De Franco Coll: J. Ribot, Fabrica en San Gines de Vilasar [a town in Catalonia now called Vilassar de Dalt].” The theme of the 1929 Barcelona Exposition – the second in Barcelona following that of Expo 1888 – was “Industry, Art and Sport.”
