William Alexander Pickering, known as 必麒麟, was a British explorer and official born on June 9, 1840, in Nottinghamshire. He arrived in Taiwan in 1863 and worked at various customs offices, including in Takao (now Kaohsiung) and Anping. He engaged in extensive exploration of Taiwan’s mountainous regions, leaving behind a wealth of documentation. Throughout his life, Pickering showcased his linguistic skills and courage, serving as a Tidewaiter at the customs and participating in several negotiations with indigenous peoples. This included assisting the American Formosa Expedition and reaching a verbal agreement with the indigenous groups. His career continued in the Straits Settlements, and he ultimately retired due to illness in 1890. Pickering’s actions had a significant impact on Taiwan’s history and its international relations at the time.
