Seifu Shimizu (1851-1913) was a dedicated collector who earned the nickname “Dr. toy”. He spent more than 20 years building his collection and writing this reference work. Unfortunately, he died in 1913 after the publication of volume 6. A close friend, the famous painter Tekiho Serizawa (1889-1965), took over and published the last three volumes. This is the earliest compendium of Japanese traditional toys from every part of the country, printed with the greatest care by the publisher Unsōdo, particularly well-known for the quality of its color woodcuts.
