Live history, binding 2nd half of 1914 from Le Matin, perfect condition.

31st year starting with issue 11082 from July 1, 1914 to December 31, 1914 [the August 25 issue is in deficit]. Half-leather with corners, newspapers in very good condition. Minimal defects: telegraph lines logo cut out on the August 26 issue; hole on the first page of July 20 and July 31. One page repaired at a joint, four fragile

The period of these issues covers the last days of the Belle Époque, the brutal acceleration of current events, the declaration of war, then life at home punctuated by military communiqués.

This is a very rich document that is offered here. The unpublished serials published by Le Matin were of quality: Le dernier voyage extraordinaire. L’étonnante aventure de la mission Brassac by Jules Verne, Rouletabille à la guerre by Gaston Leroux and Le Secret du skull by René Bures and Jacques Ferlan.

Colette also had a column: Le Journal de Colette [July 2, Sévices; July 16, Paris ville forte; July 30, the discovery, Bel Gazou [the discovery referred to an article from July 22 that announced the discovery of a drug that would allow for painless childbirth: A blessed news: “You will no longer give birth in pain”], November 13 The woods, the old gentleman, December 4, the hunt for German products, clogs, troglodytes].

There are articles with prestigious signatures l’Homme by Henri Barbusse (July 3), la Bataille des Flandres by Albert Londres (December 11).

Did you know that Léon Blum then signed La chronique sur le théâtre et les concerts, for example, the announcement of the reopening of the Comédie française (December 7)?

At that time, racing cars and planes were going at the same speed (about 110 km/h) (Lyon Derby, July 4; London-Paris-London by airplane (arrival at Buc aerodrome), July 11).

Naturally, Le Matin talks extensively about the trial of Madame Caillaux (from July 19), but also about Carpentier’s victory in the world boxing championship (July 16). Interesting debate Should we go on a general strike in the event of war? (July 16) with a vote by the socialists where the yes won (1,690 mandates against 1,174, July 17).

Then some astonishing articles: Finally! the French army may have a new campaign uniform in 1920 that will be blue-gray (July 3) or on August 2, in the midst of the turmoil, an inventor offers a way to bring about general disarmament. Social movements such as the miners’ strike in the Loire basin (July 4) or feminists, our suffragettes also demonstrate (6 July), against the war, 36 demonstrators arrested Monday evening were sentenced yesterday (cries of “down with war”) (July 30).

But in Le Matin of 1914, it was above all the article by Senator Auguste Gervais, the truth about the affair of August 21, which provoked general indignation in the South [of France] and hostility towards the soldiers of the South of France.
