Extremely rare manuscript of Mireille Claris-Rouvier’s journey from August 1 to 5, 1914 (in French)

From Stockholm to Paris via Berlin (August 1-5, 1914).

Fascinating account of the return from Stockholm of Mrs. (at the time Miss) Mireille Claris-Rouvier. The label on the front cover (written by the author’s son): “Written on the spur of the moment by my mother who has just spent two years with Mr. Mermann, a widower, father of two little boys, Sven and Rolf, whom she must educate and instruct. She is a graduate of the Loges boarding school (Maison de la Légion d’Honneur in Saint-Germain en Laye”.

It is likely that the author belongs to the family of Gaston Rouvier, who taught in Uppsala, Sweden, and was mayor of Vésinet. The author reproduces the Germanophobic stereotypes of her class, but describes a return, without a passport, where all nationalities (Russian, American and German) help her. The distressing news is repeated throughout the journey.

School notebook, partly disassembled, missing a few pages as mentioned at the beginning. Labels stuck on the first cover by the author’s son. Author’s note dated 1976. Very legible writing, some collages (postcards, ticket, telegrams etc.), story of the return from Berlin to Paris complete
