Towards the end of The Civil War President Lincoln proclaimed a Thanksgiving for the last Thursday of November. The Union League Club of New York City held a meeting on November 3, 1864 to organize an event “to furnish a Thanksgiving Dinner for the Soldiers of the Potomac, the James, the Shenandoah and the sailors in the North Atlantic Squadron”.  One of the organizers of the event (serving as treasurer) was Theodore Roosevelt (father of “Teddy”).
