Towards the end of The Civil War President Lincoln proclaimed a Thanksgiving for the last Thursday of November. The Union League Club of New York City held a meeting on November 3, 1864 to organize an event “to furnish a Thanksgiving Dinner for the Soldiers of the Potomac, the James, the Shenandoah and the sailors in the North Atlantic Squadron”.
