Circa 43,5:27,3 cm. Photolithograph on paper shopping bag. Designed as a functional and ephemeral bag, most of them were used and did not survive. Our bag with minimal toning due to paper quality otherwise in mint condition (it has never been used). Edition size unknown (MoMa, New York mentions 9000 copies). Barbara Kruger’s I Shop Therefore I Am became an iconic artwork, being reproduced on items such as shopping bags and other consumer products. The techniques of photolithography and screenprint are ideally suited to Kruger’s strategies of appropriation and replication of imagery from mass culture, and they are used throughout her work, whether large-scale and unique, or ephemeral and printed in thousands of copies.
