Wellingborough: Christopher Skelton, 1983, thick 4to., quarter leather over cloth, cloth portfolio, cloth and paper-covered boards slipcase, all bound by Desmond Shaw of Cambridge. xxiv, 256, (3); (ii), 257-545, (2) pages; separate portfolio containing a title-page, exclamation page, and eight prints printed directly from the artist’s woodblocks.

First edition, limited to 1435 copies, of which this is one of 85 Special Copies hand-numbered on the colophon and bound thus. Spine of volume one lightly toned. Volume two with some dampstaining along the bottom edge of the spine, slipcase with some minor wear, else a near fine copy of this scarce edition. 

Designed by Skelton and printed at Skelton’s Press. Notes by the publisher, “Eric Gill: A Personal Record by Douglas Cleverdon,” followed by a complete bibliography of Eric Gill’s engravings with a check list of books containing the engravings. Over 1,000 engravings described and illustrated. 

The 8 prints in the portfolio are: ‘A Garden Enclosed’, ‘Self-Portrait’, ‘Surrexit Alleluia’, ‘Tree and Dog with Flames’, ‘St Thomas’s Hands’, ‘Girl with Mirror’, ‘I am a Little World’ and ‘Man and Woman Embracing’.
